Abstract

This article shows that Seloko adat is a form of oral literature originating from the Jambi area. Used in ceremonial communication and as another means of expression, traditional seloko plays an important role in traditional Jambi Malay wedding processions. One of the important moments in the use of traditional seloko is at the Traditional Handover Ceremony. In this event, there was a dialogue between the men and women who came. This procession includes the traditional event known as Kato Be Jessica in the Yard and the Order of the Disembarkation from the Mediator. In both incidents, not only ordinary communication language was used, but also traditional seloko, such as traditional rhymes, traditional proverbs, traditional words and other traditional expressions. Such expressions are characteristic of traditional seloko. This article aims to produce qualitative data to find out and understand Jambi Malay customary law and the Seloko tradition of Ulur Antar Adat in Jambi Malay Traditional Marriage, which tradition is still used by the people of Jambi. Jambi Customary Law provides knowledge for the community to continue to preserve the traditions that apply to this day. In conclusion, Malay customary law has a very important role for the Jambi community as guidance and social control for the Malay community in the city of Jambi in addition to state law. Thus, with awareness of customary law, harmony and order can be created in society.
